''Want
of money and the distress of a thief can never be alleged as the cause of his
thieving, for many honest people endure greater hardships with fortitude. We
must therefore seek the cause elsewhere than in want of money, for that is the
miser's passion, not the thief's.''
William Blake
William Blake
When
I was a young and ernest rebel Blake’s words were noble and golden and fired me
with purpose and inspiration. He was a visionary and commentator of huge
significance.
His
great understanding and exploration of the human condition was always
fascinating to me and in my callow youthfulness I aspired to make poetry and
music that provokes thought and awareness of the issues of our time. Like Blake
I want to see the poor uplifted and transported from their drudgery and
hardship.
I
want to live in a civil society that values the difference in people and
protects the weak and vulnerable. I believe that how well we succeed, as a
society, in this respect, will prove to be the basis on which we are judged by
those to come in England’s green and pleasant
land.

William Blake, a great Englishman. I wonder who people might think is todays equivalent artist, if indeed there is an equivalent.
ReplyDeleteRock on Edgar. We chatted at Leeds. What a brill performance that was.

The north London gig is a bit of a trek for me so see you at the Monty. Its a lovely place to hear good music. I thought we'd seen the last of it but get it while you can I say. Should be a good night.

Going to try and make it to this. Dean
ReplyDeletelets just hope romney burns at the stake for his delusions of power.
ReplyDeleteWhat time do you think you will be playing at the Montague Arms? We are going to a Firworks show earlier on in the evening and just wondering if we could get down for your set?
ReplyDeleteHi Dean
ReplyDeleteI reckon not before 10pm. It doesn't finish until 12 mid night.
Hope you can make it. Looking forward to chatting T-shirts etc some time. I have a couple of other ideas we could look at. Any way if you come - safe journeys.
Let's hope and pray, if you think it will help, that Romney is deluded. Bush was enough.
ReplyDeleteLet's stop burning effigies of Guy Fawkes at the stake. It was a practice encouraged by the state to deter us all from an insurrection which is long overdue.
